Cormorants have blue eyes. They are not a beautiful bird, and in some of my photos of them, they even look a bit scary when their blue eyes glow murky in some light conditions. However, the bird in this photo, which is perched on a yellow steel bar against the clear blue sky, looks somewhat cool, maybe because of its posture and its eyes that are as clear as the sky. It seems cormorants aren't attractive to bird watchers, but I've come to like them while taking many pictures of them.

I wrote earlier about regional differences in escalator etiquette. Here in the Tokai area, people usually walk on the right side of the escalator and stand on the left, but in the Kansai area, where I lived, it is the opposite. There is another example of this kind in the driving customs. In this area, flashing your headlights generally means giving way to other vehicles that are coming into your path. However, in the Kansai area, flashing your headlights warns other vehicles not to come into your path. The same signaling has totally different meanings, which is more scary than interesting.

I can fly like Superman in my dreams at night. It's thrilling taking off vertically into the sky and darting through the clouds, and seeing an aerial view of the landscape stretching out in all directions far down below. I've flown over many different places, including big cities full of skyscrapers and mountains capped with white snow. One of the most impressive views I ever witnessed was the earth from the altitude at which our space shuttles orbit our planet. The curvature of the earth was visible, and I was moved by its magnificence, although it all happened only in a dream.

It's been really hot lately. During this season of the year, when I'm at home, standing in front of the air conditioner is one of my favorite ways to get cooled off. Another way, which I prefer to the first one, is to use a 500-milliliter plastic bottle that's full of frozen water. I hold it to my right and left armpits alternately, each for half a minute or so. I learned somewhere that cooling those spots results in cooling down your body. I'll skip the reason why that is, but anyway it really works, and is worth a try.
